What do you do if newborn kittens have fleas. If you use soap choose a nonmedicated tear free gentle soap only like dawn or baby shampoo. Treat the mother and remove the fleas from the kitten. Daily combing is also recommended and effective. Take a dry hand towel and spray the ovitrol or other flea tick spray and cover the towel.

Newborn kittens with fleas or ticks should be treated immediately. Fleas cause many health issues. Then rub the towel over the baby kitten being sure not to get it in its eyes ears or mouth. Because of their age and fragility don t apply any type of detergent or medication on newborn kittens.

When the fleas surface pluck them out and send down the drain. Do as often as needed and for the momma cat. Fleas hate it but it is safe for your pet. At night when the other lights are out the fleas will be attracted to the warmth and light and fall into the bowl of water where the surface tension caused by the washing up liquid will trap them for disposal the next day.

Soapy water helps prevent fleas from jumping out of the bathwater although it isn t actually necessary to remove or kill fleas. Put a thick soapy lather of dawn around the neck and ears first as they will run fast and far to get away from the soap. If your kittens have any fleas the best thing to do is to go to a vet. Because of newborn kittens young age and fragility do not apply any type of detergent or medication on them.

A kitten s body is small so there isn t a large area to cover and you should be able to remove the fleas with your fingers or tweezers easily. However you can bathe them in dawn dish soap in the mean time. Blood sucking parasites can be fatal to kittens as they can cause anemia or a low red blood cell count or carry lyme disease. Avoid flea shampoos because they aren t intended for use in kittens under 12 weeks of age.

Just get the original blue formula. Then remove the fleas from the kitten. Until kittens are old enough for flea treatments to be used it will be necessary to manually remove fleas as well as treat the mother and decontaminate the home.

Fill a bowl with dawn and warm water. They will probably give you a product and instruct you as to how to use it. Carefully remove fleas from the kitten s coat and drop into the bowl of water to drown the flea. This helps to remove some of the fleas and keep an eye on whether the infestation is lessening.

Apply a new layer with a towel every couple of days. Check with your local vet since the kittens are so young.
